I was tasked with reimagining the title sequence for Stanley Kubrick's classic satire, Dr. Strangelove or : How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love the Bomb.
Conceptual Strategy: Satire and Contrast
My concept centered on amplifying the film's core themes of satire, black humour, and the absurdity of power. I achieved this by contrasting the high-stakes subject matter with trivial, everyday visual tropes, utilizing hidden jokes and motifs throughout the sequence.
Key visual motifs I developed to execute this concept included:
Absurd Documentation: The sequence opens with a seemingly mundane shopping list being typed up, immediately contrasting the threat of nuclear war with trivial daily life.
Juxtaposition: The tactical map room, usually a place of seriousness, featured humorous elements like using grenades as markers on the tactile table and the unexpected image of a paper airplane flying through the control room.
This approach ensured the title sequence provided an immediate, satirical context that prepared the audience for the film's unique blend of humour and terror.
